Repairing the Maastricht Stone
Monday 13 July 25, work started on repairing the vandalised Maastricht Stone. The stone was cleaned , the top was sanded down to a new flat level and holes were filled . The work was done, by Andy, arranged by the Roland Brothers Funeral Directors. The stone cannot be sealed, as first thought, but in time it will build up its own surface.
Vandal damage in the Remembrance Garden
Vandals, well criminals actually, have done serious damage to the Maastrict Stone. The Stone stands at the entrance to the Garden of Remembrance, which is the responsibility of the Friends of St George's Chapel. It was given by people of Maastricht, in gratitude to the Royal Air Force for the their help in World War ll.
The damage probably happened on Sunday 27th night/evening or Monday 29th April evening/night.
The Museum and Chapel site are closed on Mondays and it was noticed by the gardener on opening on Tuesday morning. The perpetrators entered the area, bringing tools or implements and spent a considerable length of time removing the top surface of the Stone. It has been scraped, dug into, edges chipped and ruined. It will be an expensive professional task to restore a good surface and seal it.
