Victory in Europe remembered 80 years on.

Picture

The Mayor and Mayoress  Councillor David and  Anne-Marie Jefferys attended a small service around the flagpole, together with about 50 people. The service was led by Verger Margaret Wilmot.

Flags of St George and the RAF Regiment Association were paraded by Sandra Carpenter  and Neil Athron. George, the lantern 'Light in the Darkest hour' was carried by Steve Brenchley and hung by the flag pole.

Extracts of speeches by King George Vl and Winston Churchill were read, prayers and a minute of silence.  A wreath was laid by the Mayor and all were invited to place a poppy leaf in a basket at the flagpole, in remembrance. The very appropriate rousing hymn 'I vow to thee my country ' was sung with musical accompaniment.
